Although perfectly healthy in early childhood, at the age of 8, Gypsy suffered an injury that, according to her mother, Dee Dee, restricted her to a wheelchair and was soon followed by the onset of a series of unforeseen chronic illnesses and disabilities, including leukemia, muscular dystrophy, asthma and symptoms of brain damage — something that gave Gypsy the marked physical impression of looking like a toddler despite her being in her early teens.

Gypsy has heard about the series from others and appears to be most upset about how her friend Aleah (played by AnnaSophia Robb) is portrayed. "She heard from people about how Aleah was being portrayed, and she was very upset about that because Aleah was such a positive influence for her like an older sister and she didn't like that," Macelli says. "She feels like, 'Oh well, I did what I did so I'm fair game kind of in way.' That was something that was very upsetting for her."
