So the average final season episode length is 72 minutes, which is definitely on the long side. Having four episodes in a row around 80 minutes each, in particular, is considered a run of super-sized episodes. Some fans have been disappointed that the final season episodes aren’t two hours each. But an hour-long drama series would have no reason to make two-hour episodes — if they were aiming even close to that long, they’d just break them into two episodes. So the episodes were always going to be less than the length of two regular-length episodes combined. HBO added to the confusion, however, when its chief Richard Plepler described the final season in an interview as “like six movies,” referring to their cinematic quality, not length.
