Gently and the New Age begins with Gently giving evidence at The Old Bailey against corrupt police officers in the Met – his old enemies. Until then, he had been a serious stage actor. Peter Hall cast him in the West End play The Battle of Shrivings alongside John Gielgud. Roman Polanski, noticing him at the Royal Court, made him Banquo in his 1971 film of Macbeth. He gave highly praised performances in A Streetcar Named Desire and the first revival of Look Back in Anger. “He was the actor I wanted to be,” says the producer Bill Kenwright. “I wanted to sound like him, look like him, act like him. I wanted to have his career. He was terrific.”
