The reductio ad absurdum of patriotism — one might wish to recall this particular Friday morning — is the fanatic loyalty the American university fraternity house system attracts. This obliges the same rich kids who would have avoided the draft 50 years ago to set up military-style induction courses for other rich kids who, if they live, will then pay over the odds to live together in a state of fetid and brutal masculinity in the complacent expectation that in later years they will lever one another into the nation’s top income brackets.
