Vivian Howard: The star of 'A Chef's Life' expands her restaurant reach into Wilmington ('1on1 with Jon Evans' podcast) - WECT-TV6 - per Wect
"It was really exciting because I didn't think anybody was going to see it, and we had leveraged a lot by making it," Vivian says. "When you're filming, in your restaurant, a tv show, and there's no home for it, it doesn't really make sense that you'd be making a tv show, your diners look at you like you're insane. Your staff, whose job is made more difficult because you're in their workspace filming, is disgruntled. We had assumed tremendous exposure based on filming with my family and filming in our business, and to hear that it was going to have a platform was tremendous."

The idea for A Chef's Life came before the accolades, however. Howard and Knight started working with Durham filmmakers Cynthia Hill and Rex Miller soon after the restaurant opened, raising money with the Southern Documentary Fund as their fiscal sponsor. Hill, who is the show's director and producer, is also a native of eastern North Carolina, which she has featured in past films.
Vivian Howard to Wrap Up 'A Chef's Life' with Harvest Special - per Foodandwine
Beginning in 2013, the docu-series examined Howard’s homecoming to North Carolina as she and her husband uprooted from New York City’s culinary scene to open a restaurant at the invitation of Vivian’s parents. As the show’s opening credits reiterate each episode, the series is about more than just the menu, and includes moments of Howard raising her twins, working on the family farm, and “exploring the South on ingredient at a time.” In those explorations, Howard has introduced viewers to a variety of farmers, producers, and purveyors, some of whom will be making an appearance in the finale special. Titled A Chef's Life Harvest Special the hourlong episode will see Howard host a dinner party for a handful of the more memorable characters as she prepares signature Southern ingredients one more time.
